Mammalian ribosomes consist of 82 different proteins and several RNA molecules. Sequence analysis of ribosomal proteins is essential for structural and functional studies and for understanding the evolution of ribosomes (1). Using human lymphoblast RNA and ABC (ATP binding cassette) protein (2) specific primers, we amplified a fragment highly homologous to the rat ribosomal L37a cDNA (3, 4, 5) by reverse transcription and subsequent nonstringent polymerase chain reaction. By screening a human nasal polyp library with this probe, a full length clone of the human homologue of the rat ribosomal protein L37a was isolated. The coding regions show 91 % identity on the DNA level. The amino acid sequences are identical. The sequence alignment is shown below. The recognition sequence for posttranscriptional processing is underlined.
